All you need to know about jaw pain, TMJ dysfunction, Jaw physiotherapy and TMJ physio in London
How our Jaw Physio Assess Jaw pain during TMJ Physiotherapy appointment?
The jaw is part of a larger movement system and the muscles responsible for chewing work directly with the muscles of the face, the head and the neck. If one of this structure is unbalanced it may cause jaw pain. That is why our physiotherapist assessment includes a full biomechanical look on your issue to find out the root cause and address it properly.
During your appointment, your physiotherapist may assess:
- How your jaw opens and closes
- Whether the movement is symmetrical or restricted
- The muscle tension around the jaw, neck and face
- Neck mobility and posture
- Habits such as jaw clenching or teeth grinding
- Activities that increase or reduce your symptoms
- As well as a biomechanical check of your other joints

Physiotherapy to treat Bruxism and Teeth Grinding, What is Bruxism?
Bruxism is commonly known as teeth grinding or jaw clenching. It can occur during your sleep or while awake. Many people are not even aware that they are regularly tightening their jaw muscles for long period of time.
Repetitive clenching contributes to the symptoms of jaw pain. While physiotherapy cannot directly stop all forms of teeth grinding, it can definitely help to manage the physical effects and give advice and tips to relax your jaw and to become more aware of when you are clenching your jaw.
For some patients, a combined approach involving physiotherapy and dental care may be recommended depending on the cause and severity of your symptoms.
What is a TMJ dysfunction? Also called Temporomandibular joint dysfunction
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) is often referred as TMJ dysfunction. It is a condition that affect the joint of the jaw and the muscles that control the movement of the Jaw. This condition can cause a wide range of symptoms, the main ones being jaw pain, jaw clicking or popping sounds when you chew or speak. Patient can sometimes find it difficult to open the mouth as some facial tensions restrain their joint from opening.
Headaches can also be triggered and most patients feel a discomfort when chewing.
Can physiotherapy help TMJ dysfunction?

What exercises are used for TMJ dysfunction?
Here Three Jaw Exercises that I give to my patients to start with after the first sessions.
Be mindful of Relaxing your Jaw exercises
How to do it:
Sit comfortably with your lips gently closed, your teeth slightly apart and your tongue resting lightly on the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth. Hold this position and breathe with the nose slowly for 30–60 seconds. Count until 4 during when you breath in and count until 6 while breathing out. During this time, think about your jaw muscle and each time your breath out relax them a bit more.
What it does:
Helps reduce unnecessary jaw muscle tension and prevents clenching.
Jaw Muscle Massage exercises
How to do it:
Using your fingertips, gently massage the muscles around your cheeks and temples in small circular movements for 1–2 minutes. During this time keep doing the breathing exercises seen above in 4:6 to increase the muscle relaxation
What it does:
Relieves muscle tightness and reduces facial tension linked to jaw pain.
Can physiotherapy stop jaw clicking?
Jaw clicking is a common symptom associated with TMJ dysfunction but the presence of clicking does not always mean there is a serious problem. Physiotherapy Treatment focus on improving movement control, reducing the excessive muscle tension and helping you to develop strategies to manage symptoms. The goal is not to remove a clicking sound but to improve comfortable jaw function and to reduce painful symptoms.
Is jaw pain related to neck problems or posture?
In some cases, the jaw symptoms can be influenced by the neck and upper body tensions. The jaw, head and neck work together through a complex network of muscles and bone so an changes of neck mobility, your posture or the tension of your jaw muscles may lead to jaw pain.
What Is Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ)?
The temporomandibular joints are located on both sides of your face where the lower jaw connects to the skull. These mobility of these joints allow you to eat, speak and yawn. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction describes a group of conditions affecting the function of your jaw joint, the surrounding muscles or the way your jaw moves. Pain and symptoms can vary significantly between individuals.
Can stress make TMJ pain worse?
Yes, Stress definitely contribute to increased your muscle tension and unconscious jaw clenching. During periods of stress your jaw muscles will tighten without you even noticing it, particularly during concentration or sleep time. Over time, this increased of your jaw muscle activity will keep increasing these tensions until they become chronic and so, painful
Physiotherapy can help by teaching strategies to reduce unnecessary jaw muscle activity, improve relaxation awareness of this area and address physical factors contributing to symptoms.
Should I see a dentist or physiotherapist for TMJ pain?
Both can work together, some jaw pain only needs a physiotherapist mainly when they are due to posture or muscle inbalance. But so jaw tensions can have built due to missing tooth or a bad positioning of some of your tooth. In this case working hand to hand with a Dentist or an orthodondist will be very efficient to reduce your symptoms effectively.
