What is baby chest physiotherapy?

Chest physiotherapy is a manual, painless and non-intrusive technique, which has only recently arrived in London, but has been widely used in France, USA and Switzerland for a long time.  It is the most efficient technique for treating the following respiratory issues in babies without medication or antibiotic

  • Bronchiolitis
  • Bronchitis
  • Chest infection
  • Pneumonia
  • And can also help relieve the symptoms of Asthma.

At the beginning of the session, the physiotherapist will collect information on the baby’s medical history from the parents and assess the frequency of the cough and the baby’s eating and sleeping patterns. Once the physiotherapist has listened to the baby’s lungs with a stethoscope, in order to determine the location, the amount and the density of the mucus, they will make a diagnosis and decide the rhythm, the frequency and the intensity of the massage.

The treatment will start by cleaning the baby’s congested nose with saline solution and a small pump. This process will be explained to the parents, as they will have to repeat it several times during the day following this session.  The physiotherapist will then follow the baby’s respiratory rhythm with one hand on the chest and will accelerate the expiratory flow. This will force the mucus up to the throat. Once the mucus is in the throat, the physiotherapist will stimulate the baby’s cough reflex, which will lead to the baby expelling the mucus. Repeating this action will clean the baby’s lungs from mucus and will allow normal oxygen flow from lungs to blood. This technique is efficient and painless for the baby, as the ribcage is still formed of cartilage and is very flexible, allowing this technique to be applied without any risk. Cleaning the mucus from the lungs is a big relief for the baby, who will then be able to eat, breathe, and sleep better. Chest physiotherapy will also considerably reduce the length of the illness. Excellence physiotherapy offer Chest Physiotherapy for babies at your home in London, in order to avoid contamination.

What is baby bronchiolitis?

Bronchitis is caused by a viral infection of the bronchial tubes, causing swelling and production of mucus. This causes a cough, and pain in the upper chest when the baby coughs. It can occur as part of many infections such as a cold, flu, whooping cough or measles.
