What is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?

Pelvic health physiotherapy treats a broad range of pelvic health conditions using internal and external techniques in order to give your pelvic floor the right tone, strength and balance.

Pelvic health physiotherapy plays an important role for women as the pelvic area is tied to a lot of muscles, ligaments and tissues. Pelvic Health injuries and weakness are very common but pelvic floor rehabilitation can treat them quickly with the right pelvic health physiotherapist.

Pelvic health assessment for women, pregnant women, before or after pregnancy with our pelvic health physiotherapist

A pelvic health physiotherapy treatment always starts by a thorough assessment of your pelvic muscles in order to determine the cause of your pelvic condition. The initial pelvic check-up will also indicate which pelvic muscle, bone or organ the physiotherapist needs to work on and which pelvic health exercises the physio can give you to do in between sessions.

A healthy pelvic area will lead to a healthy mental, sexual and physical life.

Each of our pelvic health assessment and treatment are tailor made for your specific condition and can be done before your pregnancy to facilitate your delivery, after your pregnancy to avoid any incontinence or postnatal symptoms or at any time of your life

Pelvic health physiotherapy is key for a pre or post-natal wellbeing as the body becomes very stressed during pregnancy.

A pelvic health physiotherapist specialises, assesses, and treats the different conditions linked to the pelvic bone and pelvic muscles using specific internal and external assessment and treatment techniques.

A Pelvic health session usually lasts approximately 45 minutes, during which our pelvic health physiotherapist will:

  • Assess you

  • Answer any of your questions
  • Show you exercises that could help you

How do I know if I need a Pelvic Health check-up post-pregnancy?

Post Pregnancy pelvic floor dysfunction or organ prolapse (such as vagina or rectum) is the most common post-pregnancy experienced by women. These conditions can affect women’s reproductive health and malfunction. Also, even if these symptoms don’t appear directly after your pregnancy, your pelvic floor muscles have been stretched for 9 months, so it is not rare to see women who didn’t do their assessment and pelvic floor rehab post-pregnancy to present these symptoms further in their life due to the damaged muscles getting weak over time.

That is why we advise that EVERY woman should at least have a pelvic health assessment after EACH pregnancy. In other countries like France, Pelvic Health assessment and treatment are compulsory after each pregnancy to assure the wellness of every woman.

Some women who do not do post-pregnancy check-ups may have symptoms like pain during sex, incontinence, and back pain.

Does pelvic health physiotherapy hurt?

Absolutely not, we only use gentle stretching and strengthening treatment. If your pelvic floor is painful when coming to your initial session, the physiotherapist will start with very light exercises to not trigger your pain until she can increase the strength of the exercises.

Your comfort and well-being are our priority!

Which Pelvic Health exercises can I do?

Pelvic Health starts at home and many women can do them.

To tighten your Pelvic floor muscles, you can do these Kegel exercises:

  • Hold your pelvic floor muscles for 5 seconds, imagine holding your urine with your muscles or thinking about pulling/lifting up your genitals (Attention: Do not use the pee stop technique as it is a very old technique that can lead to bladder infection)
  • After 5 seconds, slowly relax your muscles and do nothing for another 5 seconds.
  • Repeat the process 10 times, 3 times per day

If your pelvic area is still loose or you think you have a deeper issue contact us and book an appointment with our Physiotherapists.

Our physiotherapist for Pelvic Health in London will be your best chance to recover from any Pelvic Health injury or condition.
