What is cranial osteopathy? Osteopathy for baby

Cranial Osteopathy for babies & children is a gentle and non-invasive osteopathy technique that aids the body’s self-healing mechanism to relieve tensions, trauma and stresses in the body and the head of the baby that might have been caused during birth.

The different tensions created during labour can have an impact on a baby’s future health such as baby reflux, sleeping problem, stress, colic and other baby pathologies, which could be avoided by only a few sessions of cranial osteopathy after baby’s birth.

Why Cranial osteopathy after birth helps your baby to start his life on the good foot?

During labour, the baby’s head moves in specific directions while undergoing a lot of pressure from the contractions. The compressions of the skull are usually relieved naturally as the baby starts crying, however, this process might not be enough to relieve all the compression, especially after a difficult birth, for example a long labour, a caesarean section or forceps delivery.

How cranial osteopathy works on babies?

A cranial osteopath can help relieve baby’s compressions and tensions in a gentle, safe and effective manner.  After doing a thorough baby assessment, the cranial Osteopath would hold it and carefully and gently apply pressure where necessary to encourage baby’s body to function as it should. Once the paediatric cranial osteopath has rebalanced all the different tensions, baby’s body will then readjust to the correct balance during the days following a cranial osteopathy session. After a cranial osteopathy treatment, your baby will probably be very relaxed and will sleep well. To the contrary, some babies tend to have a lot of energy after cranial osteopathy, but this is usually followed by a good night’s sleep. After about a week some tensions might reappear (or not) that s why we advise a second session to finalise the treatment and check if all baby’s tensions have been released.

Is Cranial Osteopathy different from Osteopathy?

Cranial osteo is a softer, more subtle and gentle method than other techniques of osteopathy, which makes it safe and the best approach for babies and children. The paediatric osteopath applies very gentle and specific pressures on different spots of the body and of the head, which aim to trigger and maximise the self-healing mechanism of the body, releasing stress and improving organs functions such as digestion, feeding and sleeping pattern. Cranial osteopathy while being soft and gentle technique is very efficient on many baby pathologies.

How do I know if my baby needs paediatric Osteopathy? (Cranial osteopathy)

Cranial osteopathy check-up after birth is generally advised at least once with a trained cranial osteopath to be sure your baby isn’t going under any stress or tension. The cranial osteopath will assess your baby’s physical condition from head to toe to detect any tension, digestive issue or underlying conditions and treat them with gentle cranial osteopathy techniques.

Even as prevention, cranial osteopathy is advised to make sure your baby starts their life in the best of ways and avoid any digestive, orthopaedic, feeding or sleeping issues.

Is Cranial Osteopathy painful?

Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle method of osteopathy, non-invasive nor painful. Cranial osteo treatment will drain all tension of the body, bringing a strong sensation of relaxation.

That is why cranial osteopathy is the favourite osteopathy technique to treat babies and children.

Can my baby benefit from cranial osteopathy?

Cranial osteopathy can help any baby, whether they’ve gone through difficult birth or not. Cranial osteo method will help regulate the overall function of the baby’s organs by releasing any stress, or prevent it from happening. It will help improve the general wellbeing, sleeping and feeding patterns, as well as the digestive system.
