Postpartum women’s health physiotherapy treatments for C-section scar, C-section scar pain and related conditions with our physiotherapists in London

As common as C-section delivery is, women lack information on the subject and particularly on what to do after their delivery.

Why C-section Scar Treatment in Important for Women

A C-section, as any surgical intervention requiring incision, will begin its healing process with the formation of a scar – a fibrous tissue made of collagen that will replace the normal tissue. As it doesn’t have the same quality or elasticity as the original tissue, a scar tissue might bring various complications if not treated. This is why post physiotherapy rehabilitation is necessary, in order to stop symptoms resulting from C-section scars and prevent from further complications.

What consequences C-section scars can lead to in women?

C-section scars can result in various symptoms and at different level. At first, pain and numbness around the scar are present, as well as a pulling sensation. Furthermore, the reduced mobility because of the pain and pulling sensation can affect the posture and lead to low back pain. Weak abdominal muscles and urinary urgency can as well appear.

How can physiotherapy treat C-section scars?

By massaging and mobilising the scar (stretching, lifting, brushing), physiotherapy helps with mobility and scar’s elasticity. The physiotherapist will teach women as well how to self-massage the scar at home in between sessions, as mobilising it regularly is important. They will also advise on stretching techniques and how to return to appropriate exercise levels.

Besides increasing mobility and elasticity, physiotherapy rehabilitation will help on other aspects, such as: reducing the adhesion between the abdominal layer and the scar, releasing tight/overactive abdominal muscles and starting to load them with exercises, teaching the right pelvic floor and abdominal contractions as well as the right breathing techniques.

Note that it is advised to wait at least 4 to 5 weeks before starting any massages or mobilisation exercises.

What will be the long-term results of a C-section scar physio treatment?

Mobilising the scar will help getting its sensation back and will prevent from further consequences in the future. If the belly grows again for another pregnancy, no pain or pulling sensation will be felt, as the tissue will be elastic enough to grow without any complication.

A painless scar will no longer affect the posture. With the absence of pulling sensation when stretching or moving, women will adopt a correct posture without having to curve their back to stop feeling the pain around the scar. A correct posture will also prevent from any back pain.
