Hypopressive Method, The Most Efficient Treatment to Postnatal Recovery

The hormonal changes and weight gain during pregnancy put the female body under enormous strain. After giving birth, women may experience issues such as incontinence, back pain, loss of sexual sensation or even abdominal diastasis. Hypopressive method is the safest treatment to go back to the normal daily activities you enjoyed before the pregnancy, or start exercising safely again.

Hypopressive Method & Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy can help you rehabilitate your abdominal and pelvic floor muscles effectively, so you can regain core strength and lose the extra weight from your belly and waist area. The Hypopressive Method, is a very efficient and is used by our physiotherapists for post natal rehabilitation.

For Which Postnatal Conditions Hypopressive Method is Efficient

Hypopressive method can be used by our physio for:

  • The treatment or prevention of
    • Urinary incontinence
    • Organ prolapse
    • Hernias
  • Core and pelvic floor rehabilitation after giving birth
  • Correcting posture
  • Decreasing pelvic congestion
  • Improving sexual function
  • Toning the abdominal wall and reducing waist size

How Hypopressive Method Works for Postnatal Rehabilitation

Normal exercise, such as Pilates and core stability exercises, use voluntary muscle contractions to train your abdominal muscles. This is ineffective and can even cause pelvic floor and core base weakness to women that have recently given birth.  Hypopressive exercises stimulate a reflex contraction of the pelvic floor and core muscles, thus engaging the muscles more and training them more effectively. It is important to programme and stabilise the involuntary function of the core first, to rehabilitate the muscles, before adding any training of the voluntary function.

The technique that our London physiotherapist will guide you through, involves exhalation and expansion of the ribcage, resulting in a negative pressure in the thoracic cavity, which elevates the diaphragm. After exhalation, holding your breath for a few seconds will cause involuntary contractions of the pelvic floor muscles and abdominal wall. The method is repeated in different postures and variations.

Any woman who has given birth, regardless of how long ago, can benefit from Hypopressive exercise.  Also any woman who suffers from incontinence, prolapse, posture problems or any woman who simply wants a slimmer waist. You can only do these exercises with the close guidance of a specialised physiotherapist in women’s health.

At Excellence Physiotherapy, our London physiotherapist have years of experience working with hypopressive method and we can help you regain your healthy and toned body in no time.
