What is a Pregnancy Physiotherapist?
A Pregnancy Physiotherapist is a physio who specialises in treating all conditions related to pregnancy, using the most advanced techniques to help women go through their pregnancy with fewer emerging conditions and with the best comfort possible. A Pregnancy Physiotherapist will also help women to understand, feel, and learn to contract or relax their pelvic floor properly so they can limit the strain that the pregnancy and the delivery brings on this muscle and have a faster recovery after giving birth.
Physiotherapy for pregnant women must be done with care and by a physio specialised in pregnancy or women’s health.

Which conditions can be treated by a pregnancy physiotherapist?
During pregnancy, and due to the changes, that occur in a woman’s body over these 9 months, many conditions can arise and bring pain and discomfort. The aim of a pregnancy physio is to treat, detect, and when possible, prevent these conditions from developing, in order to offer pregnant women, the best comfort they deserve.
Here is a list of the most common pregnancy conditions that our pregnancy physios treat on a daily basis and with which they can help you
Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD): it is a pain in the front or the back of the pelvis that makes walking, moving or even turning in bed uncomfortable.
Lower back pain and sciatica during pregnancy: You may feel aching or sharp pain in the lower back or down the back of your leg caused. This is due to the extra weight and pressure of pregnancy.

When should I see a pregnancy physiotherapist during my pregnancy?
I always advise my patient to see a pregnancy physiotherapist as soon as they experience pain, discomfort, or any abnormal tensions related to their pregnancy. But if you don’t have any symptoms, the best time to have a pregnancy check-up is after 20 weeks, this is the ideal time but you can be seen later if you wish. Remember that the earlier I detect a condition the easier it is for me to fix it.
What conditions can a pregnancy physio treat?
Due to my expertise and specialisation, I can help with all pregnancy conditions including pelvic girdle pain, lower back pain, sciatica, hip or leg discomfort, rib or upper back pain, tailbone pain, diastasis recti, bladder or bowel problems, and of course all the pelvic floor dysfunction that you can experience. I also support women with posture and mobility issue, teaching them the do and don’t to leave and exercises with their new body.
Is pregnancy physiotherapy safe for me and my baby?
Yes, pregnancy physiotherapy is safe for both you and your baby when it performed by a qualified pregnancy physiotherapist. Seeing a specialist is important during your pregnancy, all physio techniques must be adapted to your situation. For example, I adapt all my treatments to the stage of pregnancy, the body of my patients, the psychology of my patients and how comfortable they are with their body and their pregnancy.
How can physiotherapy help with pelvic floor health during pregnancy?
For pelvic floor health, my role as a pregnancy physiotherapist is to help prevent issues like urinary leakage (incontinence), pelvic organ prolapse or excessive tension by teaching the good daily habits, giving you some targeted pelvic floor exercises adapted to the pregnancy and to my patient’s body and history. I teach my patients how to relax or contract their pelvic floor correctly and I guide them to maintaining a healthy pelvic function throughout their pregnancy, so the delivery and the pelvic floor rehabilitation after birth is easier.
Do pregnancy physiotherapists in London offer home visits?

How can pregnancy physiotherapy help me prepare for labour and delivery?
I help my patients to prepare for labour by improving their posture, strengthening key muscles and teaching them breathing techniques. But the best way to prepare for the labour and delivery is to learn how to strengthen but mainly to relax your perineum in order to be able to relax or contract it efficiently during the delivery.

During your initial session, I will do a thorough assessment covering your posture, your range of movement, your medical history, your daily routine, your pain points if there is and most importantly your pelvic floor function, health and awareness. Once I have the full picture of your health situation, I then create a personalised rehabilitation plan, including hands-on therapy, exercises and practical advice for your daily routine. You will also receive a set of gradual exercises that you will need to do at home in between our session for best results. During the Initial session I will also start my hands on treatment and give you the first exercises to do in order to reach your goal.
