More information about diastasis recti and abdominal separation

How do I know if I have a diastasis recti also called abdominal separation?

Diastasis recti or abdominal separation is evident as a bulge or a hollow point in the middle of the abdomen, where the muscles separate. It might not be evident unless you tense your stomach muscles, for example by performing a stomach crunch.

When diastasis recti occur?

Diastasis is more likely to occur for women that:

  • Are over 35
  • Have a pronounced sway back
  • Are going through their second or third pregnancy
  • Have a multiple pregnancy
  • Give birth to a heavy baby
  • Perform abdominal exercises too early after giving birth
  • Experienced separation of incontinence during a previous pregnancy

The Abdominal muscle separation ( Diastasis)  starts during the second or third trimester of the pregnancy and it should naturally lessen in the months following childbirth.

Diastasis Treatment is Important after a Pregnancy

If the diastasis remains or worsens (for example by exercising too early after giving birth), it will cause lower back pain when you perform even simple daily activities, such as lifting your baby or getting up from sitting. It can also worsen pelvic instability and make it hard walking or going up stairs.
